Earlier this week, Dead Island 2: Day One Edition leaked on amazon, showing a warrior like Lenny Kravitz on the box cover. So, it’s only fitting that Gamescom 2022 ended with two trailers (cinematic and gameplay) for the long-overdue zombie-slaying sequel.
We follow a chiseled survivor named Jacob as he leaves the safety of his (bloody) condo and goes to hell in California with a bunch of the undead. He kills several opponents with an empty rifle, cuts it through his rotten body and smashes his head with a wooden butt against the pavement.
The gameplay trailer shows beautiful beaches, abandoned suburbs, potholed city streets and still-lit carnivals. In one of the most graphic clips I’ve ever seen on a game show, we see player-character clobbers zombies with blunt objects, jump-kick from ceilings (parkour mechanics?), and swallow gasoline tanks. Let’s shoot the crowd in the flames.
Dead Island 2 is a first-person action RPG featuring six playable characters. And according to a designer who appeared on stage, Gary Romp has an irreverent, pulpy tone and gameplay that’s all about “experimenting with your favorite zombie-killing methods.”
Dead Island 2 hits PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on February 3.
