Square Enix and developer Creative Business Unit III have released a new trailer for Final Fantasy XVI titled “Ambition,” and it contains tons of details about the realm of Valisthia, its many kingdoms, Eikons, and more.

Since its reveal in 2020, Square Enix has been slowly rolling out information about this highly anticipated RPG. With beloved Final Fantasy XIV director and producer Naoki Yoshida in the producer seat for this title, many are excited to see what the single-player mainline Final Fantasy looks like from him and his team. A few trailers have been released, further detailing this medieval fantasy adventure, and now, Square Enix has released a new four-and-a-half minute video to show off even more.

As you can see, we get to see the world of Final Fantasy XVI, Valistia, and new looks spread across different kingdoms. Here’s what the trailer reveals about each:

  • Grand Duchy of Rosaria: “The Citadel of Tradition”
  • Sanbreque. the holy kingdom of: “Where ambition is divine”
  • dalmecian republic: “Where fate changes with the sand of the desert”
  • iron kingdom: “Forged in Faith and Fear”
  • kingdom of valoed: “Indomitable in its isolation”

There is also the Crystalline Dominion, which “sits at the heart of Valistia, built around the tallest of all Mother Crystals, Drake’s Tale,” according to Official Final Fantasy XVI website,

“It’s been fifteen hundred years since the fall of our ancestors, and Valistia is slowly dying out,” reads the trailer’s description. “The darkness spreads as the day gives way to twilight, the mother flame is now only a twinkle. And as the fringes fade away, people turn to the Mother Crystal.”

The trailer says that in the year 860, the Imperial Army would march on Rosaria and “from the slaughter, a new shadow will rise, which will fall on the chiefs, indicating their destiny, black as night.”

It is clear that some prominent, human beings attached to the power of Eikons, who can essentially channel and transform into these beings, are unhappy that they are treated and viewed as outsiders in Valisticia. It looks like there will be a rebellion, and the trailer calls it “War of the Ikons.”

“I am pleased to announce that our latest trailer – Ambition – is now live,” writes Yoshida in a press release. “Instead of focusing on the action as we did in our previous reveal, this time we wanted to take a more in-depth look at the world of Final Fantasy XVI’s lore and its rich characters — with the chiefs front and center. ”

Director Hiroshi Takai wrote in the press release that “as the game nears completion, the team has turned its full attention to debugging and final adjustments.” He says that now that things are starting to come together, the game is “something really special.” I’m inclined to agree if this trailer is anything to go by.

With today’s trailer, both Yoshida and Takai have released a statement with more insight into both the game’s development and its lore. You can see both in the tweet below:
