Callisto Protocol graced the cover of our magazine a few months back and is currently one of the most anticipated games of the year. Glenn Schofield, creative director of the new space horror adventure and one of the lead designers of the Dead Space franchise, made an appearance at Gamescom 2022. He thanked fans for the positive response and talked about the gritty new gameplay trailer, “We’re combat with a crazy ending and showcasing something new.”
Protagonist Jacob Lee draws a health item with one of his abilities and proceeds to spin his way through a group of monsters that are on the move. He stabs one in the back and fires at the other creature, stumbling towards it with the tentacles around its exposed belly. To set things off, he brawls with a regenerated creature adorned with cyst and sends it flying into the environment in a chainsaw-like structure.
In the next scene, Lee tumbles down a sewage drain while dodging deadly pillars along a low-light channel. And in a shocking ending, reminiscent of death scenes from Dead Space, the leading man hits the large propeller obstructing the tunnel and explodes in half (I’ll leave the bloody details to you). Schofield warned that the ending of the trailer would be wild, and it did not disappoint.
Callisto Protocols launches on December 2 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
